Aviation and ocean shipping

In today’s world aviation and shipping fulfil a number of pivotal functions. Aviation facilitates economic growth and cultural exchange, provides an efficient means of international travel and creates employment. International shipping is of key importance for our globalised economy and a major source of wealth in the Netherlands. In relative terms, shipping is one of the least polluting forms of transport, moreover.

Aviation and shipping also lay claim to scarce environmental resources, however. Aviation contributes to climate change and causes noise pollution. Shipping also has a climate impact and is a major source of air pollution. We are keen to see that further growth of these sectors is not at the expense of climate and local environmental quality. To that end our work at CE Delft focuses on three main areas:
  • International aviation:
environmental impact analysis and climate policy development
  • Sustainable airports:
design of economically viable environmental strategies and policies
  • Maritime shipping:
impact analysis and climate policy development
We’ve been providing research and consultancy services in the field of aviation, shipping and the environment for over a decade. Our clients include the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and those of several other EU member states, the European Commission, the aircraft industry (incl. Airbus), CAEP/ICAO, UNEP, Transport & Environment (T&E), IATA, the Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment, several airports and the UNFCCC Secretariat.
