A life cycle assessment (LCA) study by CE Delft for the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVO, shows that use of renovated (regalvanized) motorway crash barriers has a five times lower carbon footprint than replacement by new standard barriers, as well as scoring better on all the other 16 environmental aspects analysed. As RVO reports: "Entrepreneurs can use these results to their advantage in project tenders. Even semi-renovated barriers have additional potential for sustainable government procurement policy".
