Impact of higher levels of bio components in transport fuels

DG CLIMA commissioned ICF International and partners, including CE Delft, to conduct a study to improve understanding of the impact of higher levels of bio-components in transport fuels in the context of the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD, 98/70/EC) post-2020. This study, an economic and environmental analysis of increased petrol and diesel bio-content limits, identifies the positive and negative impacts with respect to air quality, market capacity, availability of bio-content, vehicle technology, greenhouse gas emissions (LCA), effects on the refinery sector and market shares of the fuel mix. CE Delft’s focus in this project was assessing the current state and future trends of the biofuel market. The results of the study provide input to the European Commission in their considering the implications of increasing the bio-content of transport fuels.
